| (Rockville, MD) November 12, 2008 – As a foster parent for animals, interviewer and educator, Denise Machado has been a constant presence at the Montgomery County Humane Society for almost 20 years. For her numerous contributions, the Society recognized her as Humanitarian of the Year at its 11th annual Dances With Dogs gala benefit last Saturday.
At her home, she is constantly surrounded by shelter animals, having fostered close to 1,600, from mice to parrots, bunnies and dogs. Machado’s concern does not stop with animals; she is as likely to be concerned about a colleague’s family as she is about the welfare of an animal at the shelter.
Her lifelong commitment to “special needs” animals -– those with physical or emotional needs and elderly animals -– shows the extent of her generosity and concern for all animals within the community. She was praised for her unwavering concern for all kinds of animals, her selfless devotion to animal welfare and advocacy for their protection.
