Do you have a happy MCHS adoption story

that you would like to share with others?

Dear MCHS,

We wanted to thank all of you at the humane society for your help during the adoption of our wonderful kitty several months ago.  She has turned out to be such a sweet and loving little cat.  I have heard so many people say that pets from the shelter are defective but I can't tell you how much that isn't true.  Everyone at the shelter was so very helpful and kind and we appreciate all of your assistance!  We love our funny little kitty-tail kink and all.  We have attached a photo just to show you exactly how well she has integrated into our family-we can't imagine not having her now.  Even our dogs love her.
Thank you again,

Alexandra T.

Friends for Life

Dear Montgomery County

Humane Society,

I just felt I had to write and thank you for helping us find the love of our lives – Lily. We adopted her right before the 4th of July weekend in 2003.

Lily’s name at the shelter was Mitten because she has a funny foot that looks like two toes (or like the Vulcan "live long and prosper" sign). She was 8 when we adopted her. She’s the sweetest, most loving girl we have ever had. In fact, when we first visited her at the shelter, she ran toward me and licked my face. I often wondered how her previous owner could give her up just because she was moving, but then again, if she hadn’t, we wouldn’t have found her ourselves.

Lily makes us smile everyday and we can’t believe it’s already been five years. She’s survived a cross-country trip to Durango, CO, but loves it here. From her windows, she sees deer (the biggest dogs in the world!) and even bears. Lily’s glad she’s an indoor cat.

I hope you don’t find this note silly. But I ran across an old email where I announced our adoption of Lily to our family and friends and it just stirred up a lot of emotion. After the loss of our first cat, it was hard to imagine loving another. Then, Lily came along.

So, thank you for ALL YOU DO and thank you for Lily.

Dear MCHS,

Boy, have we grown up quickly! We were adopted over Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend this past January, when we were approximately 10 weeks old; we were living with our foster mom and our real mom in Germantown when our new adoptive parents picked us up and took us home with them to Baltimore County. Our adoptive mom chose MCHS because she grew up in Montgomery County and had adopted a dog from MCHS more than 15 years ago.

We don't really remember what our names were when we were living with our foster mom (after all, we were just babies), but our adoptive parents named us Asterix (that's me--the tuxedo girl) and Obelix (and that's me--the orange tabby boy) after French cartoon characters. Asterix and Obelix are kind of a mouthful, so we go by Asty and Obie. There were just the two of us in the litter, and we've been inseparable since birth.

Sometimes we pick on each other (we guess that's typical for siblings) and sometimes we eat each other's food and steal each other's toys, but for the most part, we love curling up together, sharing a seat on the window together, racing around the house together and rolling over on our back so our parents can scratch our tummies together.

We're now eight months old and B-I-G. Obie is definitely the bigger one of the two of us (he's the boy), but we're both growing up to be sleek and strong. Our adoptive parents think our dad must have been somewhat long haired (they met our mom, who was a short-haired tortie), since we have medium-length fur and huge, fluffy racoon tails. We're very well behaved; we scratch on our scratching post and pad (and sometimes on the front door mat), but never on the furniture. We don't jump up on things we're not supposed to. We love curling up in the closet, which is allowed, and on the guest bed, which is also allowed.

Mostly, our parents are so thankful to have us because we're such good company--we wait for them by the door when they come home from work, and we're exceptionally affectionate, warm and cuddly. And we're champion purrers ...

Thank you, MCHS, for bringing us together with our parents!

Hi!  It's been about a year since I adopted my dog Brody from the Montgomery County Humane Society Rescue so I thought I'd send an update on how great he's doing.

When I adopted Brody he was quite a sick little puppy.  He had
pneumonia, then shortly after clearing up the pneumonia he was
diagnosed with mange.  His poor little immune system was working
overtime!  We had to go to the vet weekly for dips to clear up the
mange, but eventually we got it under control.

He is quite the energetic dog now!  When I first adopted him, he was
so sick that he would just lay around for most of the day so this new found energy was quite a surprise.

He is still an incredibly sweet and affectionate puppy and just loves having his belly rubbed.  He also loves running around the yard with my other dog chasing squirrels and exploring.

Hi,

I wanted to thank you for helping us adopt Dexter and Pearl, two miniature schnauzers who were given up to the MCHS in October and December 2007, respectively.

When we first saw Dexter at the shelter last October, he had just been left by his family, but he was still a bundle of love, and sat right in my lap on our first visit.

When we adopted Dexter and started him in obedience school, it was obvious that he was especially bright: he loves training and he's close to being ready to earn his Canine Good Citizen certification, which will allow him to become a therapy dog and sit on lots of laps. I'm especially proud of him for how far he's come and how quickly he's learned, and I'm grateful to you for taking such good care of him before we adopted him and for ensuring he ended up in a good home.

After we adopted Dexter, we kept a close eye on your website, and when you got a second mini schanuzer (Pearl), we were down there before your visiting hours even started for the day. We fell in love with Pearl at first sight, but you'd already called Schnauzer Rescue to pick her up because the shelter was so full.

We bothered Schnauzer Rescue for weeks, and we were finally able to adopt Pearl in January 2008. Pearl must have had a much more difficult life than Dexter did before she arrived at MCHS, because she was very nervous around other dogs, scared of strange sounds and smells, and particularly terrified at the sight of her leash.

But we've worked hard with Pearl and also taken her through obedience classes, and she's becoming such a brave little girl! She even likes to meet new dogs now, and she's doing better with her leash. Best of all, she and Dexter adore each other and love to play all day.

Thank you so much for everything you do for dogs, and especially for Dexter and Pearl, who are so special to us. We tell everyone we know that MCHS is a great place to adopt, and that purebred dogs of every breed (and great non-purebreds!) are available there all the time.

Hi,

Toto is now in her new home and settling in quickly. She has apparently had some training as she sits, fetches and heels on command. She loves to chase birds and squirrels (which my garden is oh so thankful for).  I have a new best friend in her and hope she feels the same about me. Thanks to all at the rescue shelter for taking good care of her until the paperwork cleared. I know some people consider "dog dressing" as cruel and unusual punishment but Toto has a large girly wardrobe on the way. If she wont wear them I'm sure she will have fun eating them when my back is turned.

Hi,

Over the summer of 07, my friend’s cat had gotten pregnant. My friend had promised me and another few friends we could have our pick of the litter that was to come. Sadly, her cat’s pregnancy was interrupted and only one kitten survived. I was devastated! So in November I decided I would have my kitten, one way or another and went to MCHS. I looked and looked but all the kittens already had 2 or 3 applications on them.

Then, as I walked by the sick room, I saw my baby. He was an adorable little orange tabby who was hanging upside down in his cage. I asked to see him and it was love at first pet. He kept climbing on my shoulders and giving me lots of affectionate head butts. I wanted him to have a friend, so I looked around the rest of the room and found another little cutie. She’s a Tuxedo, but unlike any I’ve seen before. Her face has a white streak going up the side of her nose but she has a little black goatee!

At first I was worried that being from a different litter meant they may not get along but they’ve been fast friends since from the moment they first saw each other. Thank you so much MCHS for helping me complete my home with two adorable bundles of joy!

Little One and Polaris Rex

Indy is a purebred Eurasier, born in Ontario, Canada on March 11, 2001. His registered name is Naku's Tremendously Trevor. He was a special boy, with pinto markings and an irrepressible, optimistic personality...Skip ahead about 5½ years to October, 2006.

A pinto Eurasier is found in the Montgomery County Humane Society shelter. AIL # 222303, Tag # 199.

Our little boy was matted, very skinny at only 17 kilograms, and with neglected teeth. Further testing showed he was also fighting a strong infection of Lyme disease. He was confused, unhappy and depressed, with both ears and tail hanging.

You guys cleaned him up, got him meds, took good care of him. Eurasier Rescue paid the bills, pulled him out, and fostered him with hugs and affection while a search was undertaken for a new forever home for him. By the end of the month, he came to me, in Calgary, Alberta.

Renamed from "Trevor" to "Indy", this little guy is bright, inquisitive, gentle and utterly loveable. Little milestones abound. Beginning basic obedience. Learning his name. Learning to focus. Learning to sit, stand, shake a paw. Quickly earning the nickname “Indy Houdini”, and then slowly learning that there is no need to escape.  Not bad for a 6 year old, catching up on his kindergarden.

Indy's optimistic and charismatic personality shines like a beacon. His solution to past indifference and neglect was to crank up the charm and the cute factor, and thereby snag a morsel of attention. He still happily turns on the charm, to good effect. People have crossed the street to pet him and visit, and he just soaks it all up. He enjoys people and adores kids.

So when by sheer happenstance we came across the Canadian Pet Idol contest, it seemed a perfect fit for this charismatic and well loved dog. Surely he will do well, and indeed, at this point he is top of the charts.  Any prize money will be donated to Rescue - potentially up to $1200 Cdn.

You folks working at the Shelter where Indy was dropped are awesome, and we just wanted to share Indy's good luck story with you. You are also invited to vote for one of yours in the Contest ... the final round starts May 12, and runs to May 19th. Just go online to PetIdol.ca, click on the "Indy" link and follow the instructions.

Bless you all for the fine work that you do!
