Without fail, every year during warm weather the Montgomery County Humane Society Inc. and animal shelters throughout the nation are inundated with kittens. Female cats come into season in early spring and stay fertile until fall, resulting in a surge of pregnant cats and offspring. To make matters worse, unaltered females can become pregnant while nursing and give birth to multiple litters each “kitten season.”
This “kitten season” according to Laurie Morrison, foster staff and parent, “is particularly hard.” Individuals are bringing mother cats with nursing kittens and underage (under eight weeks) kittens to the animal shelter by the dozens. The shelter does not have the resources to provide around-the-clock feedings and depends entirely on the charity of foster parents.
Are you interested in helping and becoming a kitten foster parent? We really need your help to care for all types of kittens - underage, nursing with their mother, and over 8 weeks old.
