Adoption Process And Fees

The Adoption Process

Welcome to the Montgomery County Humane Society's adoption information page for our private rescue located at 607 South

Stonestreet Avenue, Rockville, Maryland 20850.

We are delighted that you are considering adopting a pet.  The process and fees for adoption through our rescue and foster programs are different than the County Animal Shelter adoptions. The following will give you a general idea of the rescue's adoption process and hopefully make your visit to our cozy rescue a pleasant one.

Before you visit, you may want to view some of the animals online that are available at the rescue for adoption. We care for a variety of companion animals including cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds.

Ideally, the entire adoption process is completed within one week, depending on how many applicants have filed on the animal and the availability of the animal.

You are now on your way to finding a new friend!

Step One
Visit the MCHS Rescue during visiting hours or make arrangements with the foster parent for a visit with the pet you are interested in adopting.
Step Two

If you find an animal that you are interested in, fill out an adoption application. The more information you can provide on the application the quicker the process.

Please make sure that you bring your driver’s license or other form of ID with you, as well as your landlord's numbers, if needed.

All family members must visit with the animal within 24 hours of filling out the application. The application cannot be processed until this is done and we have received the landlord’s permission.

Step Three

Once this process has been completed, your application will be assigned to one of our adoption counselors.  This counselor will contact you to arrange an interview, answer any questions and discuss ways to make this adoption a smoother transition for both you and your pet.

The counselor will offer vital information such as: how to introduce your new pet to your current pet(s), how to receive help with illness, if necessary, and the importance of monitoring children with your new pet.

We try to assign all applications within 48 hours of the time that the animal becomes available.  The adoption process may take longer if the animal you have selected 1)is a stray that must be held for six days or 2)has a previous application that must be processed.

Please do not be discouraged to apply on an animal that already has an application.  It is commonplace for applications to be withdrawn and as a result, your application could become the first one on the animal.

Step Four

If you are approved, you will need to contact the rescue staff at

(240-453-9401) or the foster parent to make arrangements to take your new friend home. When you come to pick up your new pet, you will need to be prepared to pay the adoption fees.

Step Five
Enjoy your new pet!

What The Adoption Fee Covers:

The Adoption Fees listed below include flea treatment, de-worming, distemper vaccinations, rabies vaccination for dogs and cats over the age of 4 months, bordatella, heartworm (dogs) or FELV/FIV testing (cats), spay/neuter (dogs and cats), ID tag, collar, and micro-chip.

All dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens 3 months or older will be surgically sterilized before adoption.  Adopters, who live in Montgomery County, of kittens and puppies 8-12 weeks, will sign a sterilization agreement and have 30 days to spay/neuter the kitten or puppy unless they are adopting an opposite sex pair.  In this case, as least one of the pair must be neutered before adoption.

For out of county adopters, all the animals will be altered before going to their new homes.
